Dr. Anirban Basu

Scientist-VII / Senior Professor
Dr Basu’s pre-doctoral studies were at School of Life Sciences, Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan, doctoral work at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Calcutta and post-doctoral work at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, USA. Dr. Basu joined NBRC in June, 2004. Since then, he has been working on understanding how neurotropic viruses cause abnormality in brain function and development. The major emphasis of his research is directed towards discovering therapeutic strategies against neuro-inflammatory and neuro-degenerative disorders. So far, his work has not only highlighted the importance of neuro-immune response in regulating viral infection of the brain, but his work has been instrumental in filling the void needed to bridge the gap between translational and basic research centering infection of the brain.

Research

The focus of Dr. Basu’s laboratory is to understand the patho-physiology of infection and inflammation in the central nervous system (CNS). The lab’s current research is focused on viral infections of the CNS and neurodegenerative diseases. The lab makes use of mouse models, cell culture systems and cutting-edge research technologies such as massive parallel sequencing to generate data. Ongoing projects in the lab include elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved in neurons, neuronal stem cells, astrocytes and microglia in virus-induced inflammation and cell death; identifying key epigenetic factors such as miRNAs and lncRNAs in viral pathogenesis and understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying debilitating clinical symptoms of viral infections such as acute flaccid paralysis. Among the latest endeavors of Dr. Basu’s lab are to study the potential role of gut microbiome in viral CNS infections via the gut-brain axis and to explore the network between the psyche, endocrine system, CNS pathology and immune response. He has also explored the vector gut microbiota as a means to treat neurotropic arboviral diseases. The group aims to bring forward new knowledge and design therapeutic strategies to alleviate CNS infection. Dr. Basu’s work provides novel and general principle for cure of the whole spectrum of neuroinflammatory diseases that include infection of the CNS and neurodegenerative disorders that affects millions of people worldwide.
