Emergence of functional neuroimaging, e.g. electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetoencephalogram (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has brought long-standing questions on human cognition under the purview of scientific exploration. However, none of these methods directly measure the neural activity of single brain cells. Hence, advanced quantitative tools are required to gain insights about underlying neural mechanisms. Furthermore, age-related constraints to neural structure also require understanding compensatory mechanisms that provides flexibility and resilience to functional brain networks along lifespan trajectories. Hence, our lab is devoted to understanding of human perception and cognition with a diverse set of tools ranging from developing signal processing algorithms to study the collective behavior of neural assemblies via functional brain imaging techniques (EEG/ MEG/ fMRI) to understanding empirical observations of network interactions during complex behavior from a whole brain connectome modelling perspective. Currently there are three main research directions in the lab.
- Developing understanding of perceptual (higher order visual, auditory, multisensory processing) and cognitive (emotion, memory) processes at the level of macroscopic brain network mechanisms across lifespan ageing trajectories and in disorders of mental health.
- Developing complex systems tools that facilitate the understanding of neural mechanisms underlying perceptual and cognitive processing from the perspective of collective behaviour of neural ensembles.
- Developing advanced statistical tools using machine learning and pattern recognition methods that can characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of large-scale neural dynamics in health and disease.
